A blow dryer (a recent invention) helped aid the layers in flipping outward adding to the volume. Many women who cut their hair short in the 70s never went back to long hair in the decades to follow. To achieve a 70s hairstyle, you can consider getting a haircut that reflects the desired style, such as a shag haircut or feathered layers. Styling tools like curling irons, hot rollers, and round brushes can help create the signature volume and texture of the era.
Dionne Warwick's Cropped Curls
If you have black natural hair, this layered and wild-child look will show off that beautiful texture. The voluminous afro bob will perfectly flaunt your spiral curls. With a little product, style the hair back away from the face for extra height. Yet, it's that exact hairstyle—the fluffy, feathered look à la Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith—that's making its round on TikTok.
Long Flipped Out Curtain Bangs
The bluntly-cut bob stops right at the neckline, which makes the neck look long and graceful. Continue the elegance with a side part and feathered layers that are still long enough to tuck behind your ears. Studio 54 regular and model Jerry Hall was famed for her flowy blonde locks.

Style icons like Jane Birkin and Joni Mitchell embraced this carefree and natural texture, adding a bohemian chic touch to their looks. If you’ve been watching Daisy Jones and the Six, you’ll understand why this long, shaggy style has us heading to the salon. As Riley Keough shows to great effect, full bangs and tousled layers are a timeless combo.
The main characteristics are in feathered top and sides, along with wispy bangs. Medium hair with volumes on sides and back, this hair suits better if you have dense hair. Some of these styles have transcended time and are still popular among black women hairstyles.

Blunt Haircut Ideas To Wear In 2024
I know you already have been thinking about chopping your hair into a shag, but there are so many more looks from that decade to pine over. You might think of the '70s and only picture Farrah Fawcett, but below, we've got 20 different women–with different looks–to lust over. For all the inspo you could ever need, find the best '70s hairstyles that you'll want to bring to the salon for your next chop. Farrah Fawcett's layered feathered blowout will forever sit in the pantheon of most influential beauty looks of all time. To get this look yourself, Abergel says to start with a mousse or volumizing spray on damp hair to add maximum volume.
Scott says to cut the bangs slightly longer to "anticipate them bouncing up and getting shorter as they dry." On one hand, you have the shaggy all-over-layers, and on the other, you have a hair that's essentially all the same length. "Modern bobs are typically rough dried and flat-ironed with the ends being straight or a very light tousle to the hair," Dueñas explains. Fawcett became a star when she was cast in Charlie's Angels, and as a result, everyone wanted this hair during that decade (and well into the '80s, too).
Feathered Bob
"Have your stylist lay their comb at the start of your hairline going to the back of your head," he says. "Where the comb lifts up is how thick your bang section should be." Remember that layering will help frame your face, especially if you have a square face or one with sharp angles.
"I like a good leave-in when doing these looks, as they can be hard on the hair if you are not careful," Marilisa says. Curly and defined, this look will work so well on younger women who like retro looks. Show that you’re still a fan of elegance and volume when it comes to this gorgeous bun. If you’re a fan of elegance and glamour this will look amazing on you, perfect for formal night-outs. Beehive hair such as this one will look the best on younger women who like bold looks.
You can also accessorize the curly puffs with headbands, scrunchies, or scarves to add flair. The shag hairstyle became iconic in the ‘70s, thanks to rebellious rock stars like Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Rod Stewart. This look features evenly progressed layers—from the shortest at the top of the head to the longest at the back—to give an overall “shaggy” effect.
Scarves were also commonly worn as headbands or tied around ponytails or updos. Hairpins, barrettes, and decorative combs were used to secure and embellish hairstyles. The ’70s saw a rise in bold and glamorous hairstyles, and platinum blonde locks were no exception. Whether it was Debbie Harry rocking her signature blonde mane, platinum blonde hair was a statement of confidence and glamour.
Below, Abergel and Roszak break down their favorite '70s haircuts to copy and provide plenty of tips and tricks for how to style them. A bowl could be placed on the head and cut evenly around the edge to create this simple shape. Women of any hair type could let their hair be natural in the 70s. A time for bang exploration, another hot take to come out of the '70s was the short, straight across bangs that just barely kiss the tops of the brows. These typically came in a thicker, more blunt form than the wispy Birkin counterpart, but are also seen with varied amounts of piece-y separation here and there. To say we're obsessed with Duckie Thot's take on the '70s-era bangs would be an understatement.
The 21st century has seen the revival of many fashion trends from the past. Hairstyles like the Chelsea or punk skinheads have been appropriated and re-appropriated over time. The 1970s has generated tons of different and unique hairstyles that might take days or even months to scrummage through. And even then, you can be left clueless and undecided on which one to pick for yourself. After drying up, apply a heat protector to your hair and it’s time to fluff your hair up with a blower.

However, as a beauty editor, I feel somewhat inclined to say that the single best thing about the '70s was the hair. In fact, I'm so obsessed with '70s hairstyles that I have rocked the same '70s-inspired style (long and with a middle part) for well over a decade. We love this voluminous curly hairstyle seen on actress Kerry Washington, whose partially slicked down look really accentuates her face shape. It's a great example of a kind of "half up" style, which combines the best bits of an updo and a longer hairstyle. Although it's designed with curly hair in mind, this mousse adds a great amount of lift, which is useful for creating voluminous 70s-inspired hairstyles. We all know the '70s were the best time for great style, but can we take a moment to talk about the hair?

Rapunzel-length locs are a protective style that helped define the '70s. As seen on Ciara here, the style is striking and showcases the face beautifully. Abergel notes you'll want to show your scalp some extra TLC to ensure lengths stay strong and thick. The exceptional Joni Mitchell won hearts with her creativity and poetic lyrics, but she's also a bona fide beauty muse. Here, her long, free-flowing plaits give her look an unmistakably hippyish feel. Several decades have passed since the age of unadulterated 1970s glamour, and yet we can't help but still look back in awe.
Half Up & Down with Curtain Bangs
Full and voluminous was the only way to do a pony back in the day, and her side fringe is just the cherry on top. The singer was, and still is, known for her shock of voluminous strands, but she kept it layered and wispy in the '70s. Curl your long hair, paying close attention to the bangs, and add a red lip to be a show-stopper.
And oval and round faces will pull off shorter 70s hairstyles better. Follow the style guidelines above for your favorite 70s hairstyle for women and this decade will soon become your favorite to reference for new hairdos. Whether your hair is naturally kinky-curly or you’ll use a curling iron to get these ringlets, a center-parted loose hairstyle is hair goals. For a more mod look to your ’70s haircut, straighten your hair so it’s sleek and smooth. Give the ends a blunt yet rounded cut and match the cut with long straightened bangs.
Natural brown hair and these shaggy bangs will look cute while being so effortless to achieve. Getting a modern Beehive hairstyle can be one of the most fantastic ways of going to a party. Keeping it minimal can add an edge to your look with a neatly tied bun and a sharp hairline. If you have a longer face and want to try out a hairstyle from the 1970s, then this is what you have been looking for.
Split your fringe like a curtain and draw people’s attention no matter where you go. Down below are some of the most desirable bangs that 1970s women’s hairstyles adopted. This hairstyle induces a messy look that complements any shape of the face. It draws a slight curl towards the eyes and the fringes are kept as bangs, brushed at one side of the head.
Fringe Bangs
The Internet loves throwback photos of Meryl Streep—and with her long, relaxed blonde hairstyle, it’s not hard to see why. Wonder Woman actress Lynda Carter delighted beauty fans with her unbelievably glossy dark lengths. For a romantic feel, we adore these soft, unsharp curls styled with a floral accessory. Perennial beauty muse Jane Birkin's French-Girl bangs have been copied and referenced an immeasurable number of times by stylists wanting to fulfil their clients' laidback fringe goals.
Moving into more modern examples of 70s-inspired hairstyles, the shag has evolved throughout the decades. In the 2020s, the vibe is very much grown-out shaggy layers, seen at a particularly long length here on Dakota Johnson, and often paired with a slightly feathered fringe. (And when you're done here, be sure to check out our edits of the best 90s hairstyles and 80s hairstyles, too.) Here are some of the best hairstyles to inspire you. The opposite of the stick straight hairstyle was the all natural curly Afro.
Bubble braids haven't had a major revival since they hit the big time in the '70s, but they're definitely on the up. When you are armed with a pack of thin hair elastics, they couldn't be easier to achieve. Leave it to Zoë Kravitz to serve up a boho-inflected protective style. Here, Kravitz wears micro braids woven with thin locs for an effortless '70s look.
Auburn hair will look the best on women who like to experiment frequently with their looks. Those who dare to go bold and bright will like this purple pageboy hairdo. Cool icy cut that will look phenomenal on women who like silver or gray undertones. You can experiment with this style by tying up one side and letting the other side loose, or even go blonde to make this look pop out even more. We have made it easier for you by picking out the most fashionable ones you can apply to without any hesitation.
Not only was 1970s fashion memorable (and still relevant today), but there was also a beauty rebellion. Indeed, some of the most famous haircuts of all time can be traced all the way back to that decade, and we can owe these women for setting the trend. "If you blow-dry it forward, you can create the fuller '70s look, or you can blow it back to blend it into your locks." This hairstyle, seen on actress Amanda Seyfried at last year's Met Gala, really says "disco hair". Curtain bangs are still all the rage in 2024, giving modern day haircuts a real nod to the '70s. They also look really great when the hair is worn in an updo – Halle Berry's slightly "swooped" fringe frames her face nicely here, paired with a chic volumised style.
Make any corrections if required and then trace over it with darker lines. After you have the “trim line” in place outline the sides of this part of the hair and draw in some splits of varying sizes as shown in the example. As with other similar tutorials here on AnimeOutline the ponytail drawing will be split up into three sections. Each section is shown in a different color (green, blue and red) to make it easier to distinguish between them (you can draw everything in regular pencil).
How to Draw a Princess in 12 Step (Anime or Manga)
To draw anime hair, start by sketching the shape of your character’s head. Sketch a line where you want their hairline to be, usually about halfway between the brow line and the top of the head. Next, pencil in the character’s hair using simple lines and curves.
Don’t worry about drawing every individual strand—just add a few lines or spikes here and there to suggest the shape of the locks and the texture of the hair. Experiment with giving your character bangs that hang over their eyes or hair that’s brushed back away from their forehead, depending on the look you’re going for. You can also try giving your character a ponytail or braids if you like. When you’re done, erase the hairline, the outlines of the character’s head shape, and any other parts of the head and face that are covered by the hair. The first thing to do is to explore various anime hair references. Looking at anime hair references is going to help you gain an awareness of how different hairstyles affect the character.
Step 17
In fact, it was because the face was lighter than the background they didn’t go well together. Instead of darkening the whole portrait, I just decided to keep the background white. Because of the white background, though, all the little hairs are gone, so I take a slightly dark color and redraw them again to bring them back.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Why does Gojo have white hair? Explained.
Drawing hair is not an isolated task within the genre of anime. We want to know what our character will look like and how the hair can add to their overall aesthetic. We can begin with a simple drawing of a circle and grid to establish the different features. It allowed me, for example, to draw small, light, white strands around the hair, which wouldn’t show up on a white background. But in the end, I decided to remove the background because I think the portrait works better without it.
Though usually pony tails will face directly backwards for anime hair you can draw it slightly more to one side so that it’s shape is more visible. Otherwise the pony tail can just look like a bump on the head. You can draw the pony tail with a sort of question mark like shape.
A Guide on How to Draw Anime Hair
Create variation in the hair, but do not add too many details at this point. You have plenty of time and opportunities to do those later down the road. This way, you also relax your mind and don’t focus on unnecessary details.
Step-by-Step Guide on How to Draw Girl Anime Hairstyles
This is where we can play around with how the hair sits around the head and how messy or neat the hair can appear by how many jagged edges we add to the hairstyle. We want to work on all the features of the face making sure we build the character so that the hair does not look out of place. In many ways anime hair is not just about the hair itself but how it suits the anime style and therefore the character’s features. In this case, let us give the character bangs and ponytails by drawing a fringe and hair tied up on each side of the head. We want to make sure that the hair always extends beyond the scalp because female hair is generally long and voluminous.
How to Draw Pikachu – 14 Steps to Capturing the Playful Spirit
Vary the length, the shape and add some partitions to it. Now, following your sketch, start working on the lines of the hair. The red lines indicate the usual lines that are used in anime and manga to add dynamism to the hair, so make sure to practice and include a few of them in your drawing.
Once I am satisfied with the sketch, I create a new layer that is placed just below the sketch layer so I can color it. To speed up the process, I press the [G] key (the keyboard shortcut for the “fill” tool) and with one click I fill in the entire area inside the sketch. Just to clarify, I use the “Hard” airbrush, which is a good equivalent to the traditional brush found in other software.
Erase the parts of the hair where you add the clumps and erase any parts of the head/face lines covered by the hair. Now add some random hair clumps sticking out from the pigtails to make them look a little more interesting and erase any overlapping lines that this creates. Also erase the outline of the head where it’s hidden by the hair. The pigtails are another very common style of anime hair.
Generally ponytails will be direction behind the head, however, to make the drawing look more interesting position it slightly to the side. This will allow you to better show off the most defining part of the hairstyle. Otherwise it would just look like a bump on top of the head. Finally draw the actual hair buns with somewhat of an oval shape for each with part of it hidden behind the “back hair”. Finally you can add a little clump of hair hanging down from the middle of the front section of the hair.
This tutorial shows how to draw a ponytail in the anime style. It consists of step by step illustrated examples and easy to follow instructions. Hair highlights can really make hair stand out even without any additional complex shading and are fairly easy to add. Add the front section of the hair first as in this example it will be sticking out a little more to the sides overlapping the side sections. Draw the “front hair splitting into fairly small clumps and do the same for the ends of the “side hair”. Start by drawing the head and hairline as all the other examples.
Maybe you’re still unsure how to draw hair even after this tutorial, but I don’t expect you to suddenly be a pro. Now, erase your sketch and outline your hair following the shapes you’ve created. Repeat the step above, and this time add some details like loose strands of hair to add dynamism.
You can also make them a bit more wavy than the other examples to again make the hair look more messy. For trimmed hair draw the hair clump with flat ends that look like they’ve been cut off by sissors. Keeping this in mind we can move on to the actual drawing process. I have had this habit of drawing some awesome details in, just to notice that you can’t even notice the subtle detail you’ve drawn for minutes when zoomed out. You can break the flow of the hair by adding curls to the hair. No need to be ashamed if you don’t know how to draw something.

Don’t forget the wind and the direction it is blowing from. In our case, the wind blows from the right side, making the hair flow to the left. In this phase, your goal is to define the hair a bit more and give it that structure. You also have to think if the character is outdoors and if the wind is affecting the movement of the hair. If the wind blows from the right, the hair should lean left. Also, the clothing should lean left as the wind gets “stuck” in the clothing.

This will allow the outline to blend more easily with yellow tones of the hair, as opposed to the original black lines. This tutorial illustrates how to draw anime and manga hair with twelve step by step drawings of common anime and manga hairstyles for a female character. In many ways, anime characters can be androgynous-looking; therefore, it can be difficult to distinguish between male and female characters.
Welcome to Artlex!
At this point, sometimes I make adjustments to the face. Now we have the hair to complete the drawing, I have a clearer view of the whole portrait and notice that some parts that don’t quite fit and need adjusting. Whereas in manga style it is the lines, the strokes, which distinguish objects from one another, there is no need to emphasize things with color as much. The main reason that I made the original sketch outline disappear is simply because I do not need it. But in fact, I like to add lines because it gives the impression of being between manga and realism – that sweet spot of semi-realism. First, I create a new layer that I switch to the “Multiply” blending mode from the drop-down list, and paint in the area I want the shadows to appear.
Drawing the hairline allows you to establish how the hair will form around the head and facial structure. Making sure that our female character has feminine qualities is going to contextualize the hairstyle as feminine. Of course, a hairstyle can do this on its own, but working with more than a single factor in character design is going to emphasize the hairstyle a little more. We can start to draw in the nose and eyes of the character, remember, with feminine qualities we want to make sure that the lips have more volume. We also want to make sure that the nose is quite subtle and the jawline is sleek and petite. Let’s look at a more realistic hair formation, where we explore the potential of line work to bring emphasis to the structure of the hair.
How to Draw Anime and Manga Noses
To shade the drawing either fill the hair with light grey or use a color if you prefer (leaving the highlights white). You can then add the shadows as described below by simply darkening certain areas with a regular pencil. Be sure to keep the outlines very light so that they eventually blend into the shading. Alternatively you can skip this step and simply create the highlights as you shade.
The eyes are particularly important as they carry a lot of emotions for the character. Lastly, as an extra bit to bring more texture to the hair, you can work in some lighter shading in the different segments, to suggest variety in the layers. This gives the long anime hair more three-dimensionality and volume, which is good for anime girl hair.
Step 1
For the actual pigtails draw them similar to the “Ponytail” example vaguely resembling two questions marks in their overall shape with one being flipped over. Draw the back hair just slightly over top of the head eventually merging into the sides. Draw the very middle portion of these clumps reaching further down. You can do the same with the outer clumps on the sides of the front section. This will again give more of an impression of hair that has not been well groomed. Draw the hair right over the top of the head and hairline as in the example above.
You can indicate the front section of the hair with just one line. For the “Hime Cut” the hairline will again be covered by the hair. You can also add some basic shading to make the hair stand out a little bit more once you finish the line drawing. Also, choose colors that support the character, vibe, mood, and feeling you want to express with the hair. Green, non-saturated, moss-like color supports the idea of a down-to-earth type of character, so in my mind, the color suits the character nicely.
Copy the rhythm lines along the strands to make them more detailed. If you draw additional lines between them, you'll create nice, thick strands. For this step, make sure all your sketch lines are gone. Using your 2H pencil build a soft layer of graphite in the hair area. When you have all part of the hair in place, check your drawing to make sure everything looks good.

Since you’re not using heat to curl here, it’s best to start with freshly washed hair. Wash your hair as normal, and then allow it to dry naturally, or softly blot it with a towel until it’s just slightly damp. While your hair is still damp, apply a flexible curling product like a gel or cream if your hair is very straight or an anti-frizz serum if you need it.
Bantu Knots for No Heat Curls
To apply, start with damp (not wet!) hair and split hair into two sections. Starting with the front sections, wrap hair around the rod away from the face. Add more hair as you move down the rod until all hair is wrapped. Secure with a scrunchie and keep in overnight (or until your hair is dry). Once removed, you should be left with effortless waves. Luckily, hot tools are not the only option when it comes to hairstyling, especially if you’re looking to revive your curls and get more definition.
The first thing I'm going to do, I'm going to spray it with some water. Sometimes what I do, I spray it in my hand and then I just run my hand over that section. You just want to make sure it's not dry either because if it's dry the wave won't really hold. This ultra simple tutorial creates lovely, defined curls with a wet-to-dry technique that you can customize depending on how tight you want your curls to be. When the hair is damp, divide the hair into sections.
Surprisingly Easy Ways to Curl Your Hair Without Heat
All you need is a soft T-shirt and you're ready to go. For best results, apply your best hair mask after washing to get shiny, silky smooth heatless curls that look just as good as heat-styled locks. If you want to be able to curl your hair without heat overnight, we found this method comfortable to sleep on. Plus, leaving the curls in overnight will ensure you get the best possible curl definition.
Not to mention, you’ll be preventing split-ends, hair breakage, and flyaways. Now we can finally take the hair out of the hair donut and see the result. And you will see that I slowly unwrap the hair upwards, so I'm not just pulling the sections out. I'm sort of bringing the donut up and unwrapping it as I go. And I'm gonna do this until I run out of the hair on that section. Section off your hair into one-inch sections, using a spray bottle to dampen your hair as you go.
Braiding Wet Hair for Heatless Curls Overnight
Do you need a way to curl your locks on vacation when you forgot to bring a curling iron? Or perhaps you want to save your damaged tresses from the extra heat? These smart options can help you do both while saving you time for other beauty sessions. Once you have twisted your hair into a bun, Cho recommended securing the bun tightly with a hair tie.
One of the simplest ways to get some texture through your hair is with an overnight braid on damp hair. Rather than make curls, this will create beachy waves. According to Allure, it's a technique that actress Kate Hudson appears to love. One thing to note is that, although this style doesn't involve using any heat, braiding can cause breakage.
How to Curl Your Hair for Long-Lasting Curls, According to Stylists
"Roll [each section] into a large pin curl, and secure with a small clip," Arrojo continues. Effortless curls or splendid beach wavy hair can be achieved even during the night. These methods are not only simple but also sleep-suitable. They won’t bother you during the night, and in the morning, you will enjoy gorgeous waves and curls, ready for a day. I'm going to work with quite a big section, so I'm just going to separate my hair, grab a chunk from the back, push the rest away. Now I'm going to spray that section with water, and I'm going to spray it top to bottom to make sure the section is actually quite damp.
Okay, so I'm going to go into the next section and do the same thing. I'm just going to take all of them out and show you what I have. Oh, one more thing that I wanted to mention. It's really cool actually because the paper towels take the moisture in. It actually helps with the process of drying.
I'm just going to put the paper towel over the hair. The next step is we're going to section the hair. I'm only going to be doing four sections.
The idea is to remove the belt from the bathrobe and place it on top of your head, with a piece dangling down on each side. Then twist sections of damp hair around the belt and secure at the bottom with scrunchies (via Stylist). When you wake up the next morning, gently remove the scrunchies and unravel each side for beautiful curls. Now that my hair is dry, I'm going to unravel these foam curlers. As you can see, the method of curling created a really beautiful soft wave, exactly what I was looking for.
"Keep your sections clean and tangle-free." When you get to the bottom, what you're going to do is grab the hair elastic. Just secure the paper towel and the hair in place. I'm going to grab the second section and do the exact same thing here. When it's damp, I'm going to grab my paper towel, put it over this section and start doing the figure eight braid as well. Don't have time to wait for your curls to dry?

As you go, you gather more and more hair until you have wrapped all the hair around the headband. You repeat this process with the other side as well. Alternatively, allow your hair to set while you sleep and wake up with gorgeous, beachy waves. You can either wait for this hair to dry, which I'm going to do, or you can go to sleep and wake up with beautiful waves. I'm just going to wait at about an hour, because that's how long it takes for my hair to dry, and enjoy this beautiful view of Positano.
If you want a simple tutorial that doesn’t require multiple clips and pins, this technique is perfect for you since all it requires is a single headband. Start at the base of your hair and work in small sections, using your spray bottle to dampen each section as you go. Begin wrapping each section of hair around your middle and index finger in the same way you would wrap your hair around a curling wand. Spray small one-inch sections of hair with water so they are a little bit damp, wrapping each individually around your fingers to create a curl. On the other hand, wearing your hair in braids overnight can achieve laid-back, textured waves by morning.

Silk Curling Ribbons
For extra hold, try hairspray while the hair is still in the braid or rollers, or use a curl definer before rolling or braiding. Influencer Mimi Ikonn shared her slightly different technique on the Luxy Hair YouTube channel back in 2014. She said she prefers to use two bands layered on top of one another for more security. Also, instead of pulling the hair through and adding more each time, she splits hair into two sections and then twists each section before looping them through the bands. In the video, Ikonn used a blow dryer, but she said you can just let your hair dry naturally if you have the time. TikTok user My Pawfect Family went viral with her version of the technique.
Who should avoid using heat when styling their hair?
If you need a quick fix idea, pin curl clips can become your best friends. A French braid is a great way to curl your hair all the way up. Whereas a typical braid will only curl your hair from the nape of your neck downward, a French braid can curl even close to your scalp. For best results, make sure you do two French braids, one on each side, or you might end up with an uneven curl that only follows along the midline of your scalp. This trick has been around since the Victorian era, and it was particularly popular with women who couldn't afford a set of curling tongs (via Point Ellice House).
Leggings Method
Planning a trip to the craft store anytime soon? Turns out, pipe cleaners are a magic tool when it comes to achieving heatless beach waves. To get the look, grab a bunch of pipe cleaners, twisting the tops and bottoms together ensuring they are all lined up closely so they resemble the barrel of a curling wand. For this hair tutorial, I'm gonna be using a hair donut. Don't worry if you don't have one, because in a few moments, I'll share with you how you can create one yourself. Also I'm gonna be using a hair tie, and a spray bottle filled with water.
Twist Into Buns
Spritz a firm holding hairspray over the finished curls to hold the final style. Hair rollers have been used to create stunning curls for decades, and it’s a tried-and-true method we couldn’t leave off the list. Simply grab a set of rollers, the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT Volume Inject Mousse, and bobby pins. Take a section of hair and clip the rest out of your way.
